Hamburger Steak with Onion & Mushroom Gravy
1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
1 large egg
3/4 C. finely crushed Ritz cheddar toasted chips (you can use regular Ritz in place of the toasted cheddar chips)
1/4 C. diced onion
1 garlic clove, grated
2 T. Heinz 57 sauce
1 tsp. worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 T. vegetable oil (for frying)
Combine the meat and the next 8 ingredients well and shape into 7 patties. Heat the oil over medium high heat in a large skillet. Add the patties and cook for about 2 minutes per side to brown, remove to a plate. Drain off all but 2 T. of the drippings in the pan and add the following for the gravy.
2 T. butter
1 small onion, halved and sliced
1 small pkg. button mushrooms, cleaned and quarterd
1/4 C. all purpose flour
14.5 oz. can beef broth
1/3 C. half & half
1 tsp. oregano
salt and pepper to taste
Add the butter to the oil in the skillet along with the onions and mushrooms. Cook for 2-3 minutes then stir in the flour cooking for 1 minute. Stir in the remaining ingredients and bring up to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium low and add the patties back to the skillet. Cover with a lid and cook for 20 minutes.
